Windows Server 2008 Has a Release Date

News Update: PowerTerm WebConnect is the first and only Server Based Computing / Terminal Services solution certified by Microsoft for Windows Server 2008.

Two months ago I made the (not so amazing) prediction that Microsoft will be unable to release Windows Server 2008 (formerly code-named Longhorn) in 2007. Turns out I was right. Windows Server 2008 will be released, surprise surprise, in 2008 (February 27th 2008 to be precise). Microsoft will launch it at an event in Los Angeles together with Visual Studio 2008 (formerly code-names Orcas) and SQL Server 2008. See this post for more information about the release schedule for Windows Server 2008 updates and derivatives.

Many of us have already played with the various Betas and will also try out the Release Candidate (RC), when it becomes available, so I doubt the official release will hold any notable surprises. However, I also doubt any of us will use Windows Server 2008 in a production environment before its official release. In fact, many will not use it in production environments before SP1, which will likely not be released before the middle of 2008. As a result, we are still a whole year away from significant production deployments of this operating system.

In addition, Microsoft’s new virtualization framework, Hyper-V (Veridian), is slated for release within 180 days of the Windows Server 2008 release. From my own experience in software development this means it will be released no earlier than 160 days after Windows Server 2008. Let’s see if I’ll be right again. In any event, it means VMware has some more breathing room (which, I guess, is one of the reasons VMware is doing its IPO now.)

Update: for more information about the release of Windows Server 2008 and other Microsoft products see this and this.
