Virtualization for Meaningful Use

In light of the recent changes to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Electronic Health Record (EHR) incentive program, hospitals are scrambling to implement EHRs in a timely and efficient manner. However, this struggle is compounded by differing operational needs and a quest to maximize security and stability at the same time. According to EHR Intelligence, to achieve Meaningful Use without negatively affecting operations, some healthcare centers are turning to desktop virtualization solutions.

Meaningful Use describes the series of benchmarks hospitals must achieve to show the quality, safety and efficiency of their EHR deployments while ensuring privacy and security of patient records. To qualify for the federal EHR incentive program, medical offices have to demonstrate the first stage of Meaningful Use by 2014, and meet later stages as they are developed.

One industry expert expects desktop virtualization among hospitals to be instrumental to achieving the various stages of Meaningful Use. According to a study of the virtualization trend in healthcare, there will be a 44 percent increase in the adoption of desktop virtualization (VDI) in hospitals within the next year. Additionally, about 74 percent of survey respondents reported implementing thin clients, or evenclientless access, as part of their virtualization solutions.

Virtualization allows a hospital to provide faster access to relevant information throughout the facilities and also improves desktop manageability. By keeping (“hosting”) patient data and applications on central servers and utilizing remote clients to access that hosted information, a hospital can ensure that data isn’t accidently lost, mismanaged or otherwise compromised.

By implementing RDP-based access to hosted data, a hospital or physician’s office can achieve Meaningful Use and improve the overall performance of its EHR solution in general. One way for a healthcare facility to do so in an even more efficient way is to implement HTML5 clients. An HTML5 client solution like Ericom AccessNow allows a medical center to transform any user-device, used from anywhere, into a workstation without having to install any software on it, making life much easier for IT. This allows for the use of tablets and other mobile devices, affording even more productivity and mobility for physicians and nurses and making it easier to take notes and update patient charts, among other activities.
