Using PowerTerm WebConnect to Deploy Microsoft RDC 6.1

SHARE:

The Terminal Services Team blog recently announced the availability of Remote Desktop Connection (RDC aka RDP client) 6.1 standalone install for Windows XP SP2. Previously this component was available from Microsoft only as part of Vista SP1 or XP SP3. To obtain RDC 6.1 you will need to visit the Microsoft Download Center and download the installer, which you will then need to deploy to all the relevant systems.

In my opinion there is a much easier method to deploy RDC 6.1: simply install PowerTerm WebConnect for Windows Server 2008. One of PowerTerm WebConnect’s features is its ability to deploy RDC 6.1 to its clients. The advantages of using PowerTerm WebConnect for this purpose include:

  • Centralized deployment – when a user connects for the first time to PowerTerm WebConnect’s web interface, the PowerTerm WebConnect client is automatically downloaded and installed on the end-point device, even if the user is utilizing a restricted account. If this device does not already contain RDC 6.1 then this component will be download and installed as well. This makes the deployment process much easier.
  • Side-by-side installation – PowerTerm WebConnect does not replace the standard RDC installed on the end-point device. Instead it installs RDC 6.1 alongside it for use by the PowerTerm WebConnect client. This prevents compatibility problems between RDC 6.1 and pre-installed applications.
  • You gain all the other advantages provided by PowerTerm WebConnect for Windows Server 2008 such as centralized administration, personalized web interface and much more.

Obviously the distribution of RDC 6.1 by PowerTerm WebConnect can be disabled by the administrator for all users, or for particular groups of users.
