Ericom has made a press-release which I believe is significant, yet may require some explanation: Ericom Announces the Only Desktop Virtualization (VDI) Solution that Directly Supports VMware’s Free ESXi Hypervisor. Obviously Ericom’s PowerTerm WebConnect is not the only VDI solution that supports the VMware virtualization platform. The difference is that all the other VDI products that support this platform, including VMware’s own VDM product, require VMware VirtualCenter management server in order to control the individual virtualization servers (hypervisors). PowerTerm WebConnect, on the other hand, can control the virtualization servers either through VirtualCenter or directly, taking on itself the role of management server for desktop virtualization.
This difference between PowerTerm WebConnect and the other VDI products has been made especially significant by VMware’s recent announcement that it releasing its ESXi virtualization server for free. VMware VirtualCenter is, and will remain, a commercial product that is not available free of charge. This means that PowerTerm WebConnect provides the only VDI solution that can be implemented on top of the industry’s leading virtualization platform, without having to pay anything for the virtualization platform itself.
