According to Unisys’ third annual consumerization of IT report, there is a growing divide between mobile workers and the IT teams at their companies. This schism isn’t due to conflicts, but rather the workers’ increasing preference for their personal technology and devices. With increasing BYOD solution adoption and less reliance on IT departments for support, these professionals are pushing change in their companies, presenting new challenges for IT.
While the benefits of BYOD and mobile working are becoming better documented, it is important for businesses to recognize the risks of not approaching the strategies properly. If not carefully implemented, providing remote access and support for consumer devices can open up the door to an access management nightmare, security breaches, misuse of company resources and other issues.
“Rather than fighting this trend, we believe CIOs and IT decision-makers should study the behavior of these mobile elite workers in order to understand which approaches provide real innovation and differentiation for their organizations, and then craft their mobile infrastructures to safely support these activities,” said Fred Dillman, Unisys chief technology officer.
According to the study, 43 percent of remote workers use multiple devices for work, with 44 percent utilizing a smartphone and 15 percent a tablet. Additionally, over half of respondents reported that their personal technology is better than that supplied by their employers, a primary reason for utilizing it.
In order to support the initiative of this “elite workforce” rather than stifle it, businesses will need the right access infrastructure and solution to provide access without risk. Deploying desktop virtualization (VDI) along with a connection broker for RDP-based remote access to Windows-based applications and desktops, is one type of access model that can provide this protection as well as a high level of management. It gives professionals a secure way of accessing company data and applications on their personal devices by keeping the business’ digital property where it belongs – on company servers. This reduces the risk that data could be lost or stolen along with a device, without hindering access for the worker. By approving remote access in this secure manner, a business will gain all the benefits that supporting at-home employees and a mobile workforce provides while minimizing the potential for trouble.
