Mobile companies target BYOD trends

The bring your own device (BYOD) trend has caught the eye of mobile device manufacturers, who are beginning to cater toward the enterprise audience more. Samsung and BlackBerry have both recently revealed new services targeting enterprise use of personal devices, providing a dedicated “work” environment separate from the traditional mobile experience on their respective devices.

According to Mobile Today, Samsung revealed Knox, its imbedded BYOD solution, at the Mobile World Congress. Knox segregates work from play on the device, minimizing the risks of malware, viruses and data leaks without affecting the device`s usefulness. The service integrates a variety of work-focused apps and utilizes a secondary user interface to help promote a professional focus on being productive. That way, when working, an employee won`t see the tempting Angry Birds icon in the corner of his or her screen.

“`Security and privacy are understandably held up as barriers to businesses embracing BYOD demands,” said JK Shin, head of IT and mobile for Samsung. “Meanwhile, users are seeing the latest smartphones and tablets and knocking at the door of IT demanding to be able to use their own devices.”

BlackBerry`s new enterprise solution takes a similar approach, offering new security tools to minimize risks for users and keep work and personal data separate on the device. Called Balance, the service provides integration where it is needed and segregation at other times. This data divide is what creates the “balance” between work and play and provides unique experiences on the single device for both. It even goes so far as to allow multiple instances of apps logged in under different accounts if a user needs to do so, such as Twitter or Dropbox.

Despite these improvements that the manufacturers are implementing, Samsung`s Knox and BlackBerry Balance won`t be enough on their own to solve a company`s BYOD concerns. Businesses will still need to invest in high-quality solutions like RDP-based access to keep their data protected and secure.

Ericom AccessNow , a clientless, browser-based RDP client offers resilient, high-quality access while giving workers the versatility and performance that makes BYOD such a successful business practice. Additionally, with an HTML5 RDP client, a company won`t have to worry about device compatibility, streamlining the BYOD process for any device from Chromebooks to iPads /  iPhones and other tablets and smartphones.
