The Results are In: Browser Isolation is the Key to a Complete Enterprise Security Strategy

As the internet becomes indispensable in the workplace, organizations are faced with the unique challenge of giving their employees the tools they need, while keeping sensitive information secure from external threats. Our recent industry survey of IT professionals within large organizations covered a variety of industries including finance, technology, education, healthcare and retail. The survey revealed several important insights into how modern workplaces address – and, in some cases, fail to address – cyber-security.

The internet is an important business asset...

Survey results indicate that almost all companies (96 percent) allow their employees to browse the public internet on work devices connected to the local network. While 93 percent of respondents say that their corporate employees use the internet for work-related tasks such as research, training, and access to cloud applications, almost half (47 percent) admitted that employees browse the internet at work for personal purposes such as accessing social media and checking private email.

Public internet browsing exposes organizations to potential threats...

While using the internet at work presents many obvious benefits, browsing also exposes organizations to a variety of internet-borne security vulnerabilities such as phishing, viruses, and malware. Exposure to these security threats compromises sensitive information and can cost organizations significantly. In fact, according to a study by the Ponemon Institute, the average cost of a web-based attack for an organization was over $7 million in 2015. Similarly, a recent Gartner research report states that, “almost all successful attacks originate from the public internet, and browser-based attacks are the leading source of attacks on users.”

Organizations are trying to address cybersecurity concerns...

Virtually all enterprise organizations have some sort of security measure, such as firewalls, in place to protect themselves from external threats. Additionally, according to survey results, 46 percent of respondents' organizations use a commercial security product such as a virus scanner or proxy.

However, they may not be doing enough...

Even with security measures like firewalls and anti-virus software in place, organizations are still at risk for security breaches resulting from employee internet use. In fact, 21 percent of survey respondents indicated that their organization does not have a set strategy in place to manage secure browsing.

Isolation is the key to a more complete secure browsing solution...

A virtual secure browsing solution takes security to the next level by isolating internet-borne threats outside of the local network. Transparent to users, employees can enjoy a normal browsing experience without exposing organizations to external security threats such as viruses and ransomware.

Ericom's secure browsing solution allows organizations to provide their employees internet access without compromising security. Free to use any HTML5 compliant browser, employees can browse the net to access the resources and cloud-based applications they need to succeed – all within a neutral isolated browsing environment outside of the local network.

A virtual secure browsing solution adds an additional layer of isolation that enhances security and that enterprises can depend upon.
