BriForum Wrap-up

| 803

I’m finally back home from BriForum. It’s been great and it’s also great to be back. Here are a few items I did not get a chance to blog about while I was there:

During her presentation Nelly Porter from Microsoft not only demoed Longhorn TS Easy Print but also the support for Plug-and-Play devices (PnP). This wasn’t news in that Microsoft had already announced their intentions to support such devices, but the demo was way cool and some more info was provided:

  • The types of devices that will supported are Windows Portable Devices (WPD) and Point of Sale devices (POS).
  • Networking devices are not supported.
  • There is a new Devices tab in the Longhorn TS Manager to configure this functionality.
  • Device mapping is session specific, but system services (running in session 0) will be able to access all such devices
  • On the TS a generic redirection driver is used instead of requiring device specific drivers.
  • Remoting certification for device drivers is part of the Vista certification process.

In her demo Nelly attached a digital camera to the USB port in the client and it was immediately recognized on the TS. She import a picture and then printer it using Easy Print. As I said, way cool.

Some additional sessions that I attended:

  • Which SBC add-on product is the right solution – Wilco van Bragt and Claudio Rodrigues compared the various Citrix alternatives (and wannabees). Obviously I had to make sure that PowerTerm WebConnect got a fair treatment. I’m happy to say that it did, and I’m looking forward to them publishing their comparison chart.
  • Web-based Longhorn TS Access – a very interesting presentation by Danial Winkler and Christa Anderson about extensions to the Longhorn web interface that visionapp built. Good info, but I still believe the appropriate solution is to use an SBC product with a “proper” Web Interface. PowerTerm WebConnect for example
  • Streaming Smackdown! – a comparison of streaming solutions by Ruben Sprujit. Very interesting and informative.
  • BriForum GeekOut – what fun!
  • Decreasing Windows Login Time – I think Michael Thomason provided an excellent presentation. Tons of useful info for anybody wanting to reduce TS login time (who doesn’t?)
  • How to Deploy SBC Environment for 300,000 users – I really wanted to attend more of Charles’s presentations, but unfortunately this was the only one I managed. It was very good.

The reason I didn’t attend more sessions is that I had to prepare and deliver my own. Also, I have several very interesting discussions with potential customers, partners and Microsoft. I am looking forward for Brian to post the videos. If you weren’t there you should purchace the DVD.

My own presentations went very well, I think. The demo we did was very successful (you can watch a recording of such a demo in this webinar). The presentations had a nice turnout and some interesting questions were asked. I will be posting content from these sessions in this blog so stay tuned.
