Frequently Asked Questions

WHY DON'T ALL OF MY FUNCTION KEYS WORK?

The VT100 keyboard only has four functions keys (PF1-PF4) across the top of its keyboard. PowerTerm's VT100 emulation maps PF1-PF4 to the F1-F4 keys. The remaining function keys have no meaning in the VT100 emulation. If you want to change these keys or want to add additional keys, please refer to the section called, How do I map keys?

WHAT IF I GET A MESSAGE FROM MY AUTO DIALER AT START UP?

Sometimes people try to make a telnet connection and get a message from their autodialer trying to make the Internet connection, instead of the direct connection they want to their LAN.

In this case, go to the MS Windows 95/98 Control Panel via Start|Settings|Control Panel|Connection tab. There should be a check box saying one of 2 things:
  1. Connect to the internet as needed - uncheck this box
  2. Or choose the selection: "Connect to the Internet using a local area network"

MY BACKSPACE KEY DOESN'T WORK!

This is because you will have to set the backspace key to send backspace or delete.   To do this, select the "Terminal" menu and choose "Setup". Select the "Keyboard" tab from the "General Setup" screen. Now choose the setting you wish in the "Backspace Key Sends" section. The key can send either Backspace or Delete.

I HAVE A PROBLEM NAMING DEVICES ON MY AS/400

A major enhancement of Version 5.2 is the ability to name devices during 5250 sessions, you will now be able to print AS/400 jobs to a local PC printer, using all the controls available to printers connected directly to the AS/400.  However, there have been problems depending on the AS/400 operating system.  If the AS/400 has a CISC operating system, 3.2 will work.  If the AS/400 has a RISC operating system, 3.2, 3.7,4.1 or 4.2 will work.   In any case, if the operating system is different from the supported version, a patch can be obtained from IBM to upgrade to a workable version.

MISSING DLL FILES

You may get a message from PowerTerm that a DLL file is missing. There are 2 possible reasons for this:
  1. A User-supplied DLL file is not found on your PC. In this case, the task you are running, such as AS400 APPC requires that you have a DLL file available, (such as EHNAPPC.DLL) and this file is either not on your machine or not in your PATH.
SOLUTION: Install Client Access or Microsoft SNA client on your PC.
  2. It is necessary that the DLL correspond as a 16 or 32-bit program, to the version of PowerTerm you are running. (As example, a 16 bit WINAPPC DLL will not be compatible with a 32-bit PowerTerm.)

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR DG EMULATION USERS WHO ARE USING COM

If you are trying to connect via COM with DG emulation, it is important to note that you cannot use XONXOFF for the flow control.  The sequences used for the XONXOFF flow control are actually used by DG for its emulation. In our experience, NONE seems to be the preferred setting for the flow control on a DG.

PROBLEMS WITH OFFICE VISION (OV/400)

In order to get Office Vision (OV/400) to display correctly, you must follow these steps. Depending on the access level you have it may be slightly different.
  1. Go to the Office Vision (OV/400) Main Menu.
  2. Go to option 9, which is administration.
  3. For users with security officer rights, choose 1, which is work with users. Then, choose the user to edit, or choose all of them to edit them all, with choice 2. At the next screen, choose option 6, which is the environment information. Then, tab down to the word processing choice, and input 2, for the adapted word processor screen. Once you do that, hit enter and that will save the new setting. Then do the same for each subsequent user you selected.
  4. For the normal user, choose option 1, which is change enrollment. Then choose option 6, which is the environment information. Tab down to the word processing choice, and input 2, for the adapted word processor screen. Once you do that, hit enter, and that will save the new setting.

And that should fix the word processing display problem.

PERFORMANCE

PowerTerm is a fast program, and you can make it even faster by setting the Scroll speed to PAGE or UNLIMITED.

Scroll Speed is a parameter on the Terminal|Setup|Display menu.
