PowerTerm WebConnect Environment Variables

A variable is a programming entity that consists of an association between an identifier and its value.

PowerTerm WebConnect enables you to define variables at four levels: External, General, Group and User. The more specific level is able to override the less specific levels beneath it.

Less Specific

More Specific

External variables are defined in the HTML or on the command line from where the client is launched.

General variables are defined in the server’s configuration.

Group variables are defined in the Group Properties page.

User variables are defined in the User Properties page.

Usage:

Dynamic definitions like in Dynamic Device Names\LU Names for IBM Emulations.

PSL scripts can check for variables existence (w2h-isvar) and can evaluate their values (w2h-var).

Note The variable names are not case sensitive.

Security:

Variable values can be protected for viewing via the Administration Tool. Once a variable is protected, it can be made unprotected by entering the password of the current administrator. An attempt to exit the Administration Tool with the variable unencrypted, the program will automatically change the attribute of the field to encrypted.

Note The variable names are not case-sensitive.

To view the variable’s encrypted value:

·         Click Options | View Encrypted Variable’s Values.

Note  As a result of an attempt to change the encrypted variable to unencrypted, the user will be prompted to enter the current administrator’s password.

Intruders

Definition

A person whose login was rejected by the server becomes suspect and is registered in the   list. Upon subsequent attempts he is recognized as a real intruder. For more information see Recognition.

Recognition

The server identifies an intruder when a person from a specific machine (I.P. address) attempts to login MaxLoginAttempts consecutive times. The login can be rejected either when the:

·         user name is unknown

·         password does not match

·         user is not allowed to access the server from this machine

·         user is not allowed to access the server from concurrent machines (the user is already logged in from another machine).

When the intruder is identified, the server marks it (I.P. address + user name + Account Name on the OS) as an undesirable login. After CleanIntruderTimeoutMinutes minutes elapses wherein the intruder makes no attempt to login, the server clears the intruder’s undesirable login state.

As a result of intruder’s identification, the server issues a mail notification both to the user whose account is in jeopardy (if any) and to all the users who are defined as administrators.

The intruder recognition capability is only functional if CatchIntruder is True.

Note CatchIntruder, MaxLoginAttempts and CleanIntruderTimeoutMinutes can be defined in the [Server] section of the server’s INI file (PtServer.ini).

PowerTerm Server

Starting PowerTerm Server

The PowerTerm Server must be running in order for the client to make a connection to the PowerTerm engine. Typically the administrator is responsible for this. Likewise the web browser must be installed and running.

By default the PowerTerm Server is installed as an NT Service, with Automatic startup type. This means that the service control manager during system startup automatically starts PowerTerm Server.

The PowerTerm Server can also run as a user program. In order to accomplish this you must pass the configuration file name as a parameter.

Whenever the PowerTerm Server process is replaced by the PowerTerm Server Starter (see Shutdown), use the Administration Tool to launch the PowerTerm Server. This can also be done in remote mode.

Shutdown

There are two ways to shutdown the PowerTerm Server which are outlined below:

To shutdown the PowerTerm Server:

A    via PowerTerm WebConnect Administration Tool (recommended)

1.           Choose Action|Server.

2.           Choose Shutdown. The PowerTerm Server prior to shutting itself down activates the PowerTerm Server Starter (PtStarter.exe).

B   via the Operating System Tools (applicable only when the PowerTerm Server is running as a user process and not as an NT service)

1.           Hold down Ctrl, Alt, and press Del.

2.           Click on Task Manager. The Windows NT Security window appears.

3.           Select the Processes tab.

4.           Select PowerTerm Serve.

5.           Click End Process.

Disconnect

Disconnects the PowerTerm Server to which you are presently connected. Typically this is done in order to connect to another PowerTerm Server.

To disconnect the PowerTerm Server:

·         Choose Server|Disconnect.

Connect to another PowerTerm Server

The Administration Tool allows you to connect to another PowerTerm Server (in large intranet networks) after disconnecting from the PowerTerm Server to which you are presently connected.

Event Log Viewer

This Microsoft utility will display the pertinent log information for the server’s machine that you are logged on to.

To view the log information:

·         Choose View|Run Event Log Vieweror click on the  icon. All pertinent log information for the server’s machine is displayed.

The server reports to the system EventLog the most important events grouped according to the following categories:
