While IT hiring has slowed among small and midsized businesses, spending has not, according to a recent study by Spiceworks. SMBs are increasing budgets by an average of 15 percent, while only 26 percent of those businesses surveyed said that they plan to increase hiring, a four percent decline from earlier in 2012.
"The world's SMBs continue to increase their investment in new technologies, including tablet devices, smartphones, cloud services and virtualization," said Jay Hallberg, co-founder and vice president of Marketing for Spiceworks. "The results of our research bode well for the industry as new technologies become more pervasive and prompt IT departments to make additional investments."
Mobile device adoption on the rise
One major contributor to increased IT spending among SMBs, according to the survey, has been the popularity of tablets and smartphones in the workplace. About 53 percent of respondents told Spiceworks that they support the use of tablets on their networks, while 59 percent support smartphones. Additionally, 12 percent of businesses plan to implement solutions to integrate these devices into workflow in the first half of 2013.
Cloud and virtualization adoption also spikes among SMBs
In order to deal with mobile device use and improve data storage, access and other changes in the IT industry, many SMBs are increasing their adoption of cloud services and desktop virtualization solutions. The survey found that 62 percent of small business IT departments have already adopted some form of cloud computing, while 73 percent anticipate implementation in 2013. Virtualization has shown an even larger spike, with about two-thirds of SMBs having already deployed a solution, and a 14 percent increase is expected during the first half of the new year.
How to spend increasing budgets
With more SMBs spending on IT initiatives, many are looking for the right tools and services to spend those funds on. For many, this will mean looking at solutions for remote access, BYOD and other advanced trends. Tools like RDP acceleration will help SMBs take better advantage of the new systems and services they are purchasing, with faster computing power, improved, secure access for employees on mobile devices and more ways to utilize data and applications in and out of the workplace.
