"PowerTerm InterConnect Linux Edition leaves the competition so far in the dust it's unbelievable. As more and more companies move to Linux desktops, I hope they find PowerTerm right off the bat. I wish I had."
Andy Dunstan, Operations/Information Services Manager, Signature Housewares, Inc.

Headquartered in Camarillo, California, Signature Housewares designs, imports and distributes ceramic tableware and kitchenware. The products are designed by independent designers, manufactured in China, and are shipped by container to the port of Los Angeles where they are warehoused, and shipped to customers throughout the US and Canada.

A lot of information has to be tracked: Order transactions, shipping, accounting and customer service information reside on the company's legacy ERP system to which users connect to from their desktop using terminal emulation software.

According to Andy Dunstan, Operations/Information Service Manager, problems began soon after the company upgraded its computer system from UNIX to Linux: a server running Red Hat Linux 7.3, workstations running Red Hat Linux 9.0, Wyse 60 emulation, with communication over LAN Ethernet. Although their legacy application was old, it performed well, was highly customized, and was very stable. Finding a terminal emulation solution that would provide proper support for their critical business application in a Linux environment was proving to be challenging.

Initially the company purchased a terminal emulation solution for Linux platforms that was purportedly the same as the product they used on Windows. Unfortunately, they found that it was not the case. "We had problems from the minute we installed the product," said Dunstan. "Features that were supported in the Windows version were not working." Function keys didn't work, users couldn't jump from one place in the program to another to look things up, customer service accounting submenus couldn't be accessed, and 132 column report screen display was not available, to name a few of the issues.

Dunstan spent months working with the technical support team of the terminal emulation software company to solve the problems, but had no success. Finally, the solution was found when the developer of their legacy application told Dunstan about PowerTerm. "I decided to find out if Ericom had a Linux version and sure enough they did. I downloaded a demo copy of PowerTerm InterConnect, installed it, and suddenly everything worked. All the things we were struggling with, that were difficult and we thought we'd have to reprogram it all worked perfectly and flawlessly. It was tremendous. We were all so impressed," said Dunstan.

Dunstan claims that user productivity has increased substantially since PowerTerm InterConnect was installed. "When customer service enters an order, they are now able to jump between screens to check information. That's a real productivity enhancement feature. The 132-column display lets them look the up information on their screen, which is quicker and more efficient than printing out reports," explained Dunstan. "Also, the job numbers display works, so users don't have to go back and forth within the program to look up specific job numbers, while colors and fonts look better and are readily adjustable so users can set the colors and fonts to fit their personal preferences."

Dunstan says PowerTerm is more than just features. "There's a feeling about the legacy program, our server and about the workstation it all just feels more modern, more powerful, more user-friendly and provides better overall satisfaction."

Signature Housewares is extremely happy with PowerTerm InterConnect and plans to increase the number of licenses as additional Linux workstations are installed. "PowerTerm InterConnect Linux Edition leaves the competition so far in the dust it's unbelievable. As more and more companies moving to Linux desktops, I hope they find PowerTerm right off the bat. I wish I had."
